Welcome to my Elliot Lake Pages  (celebrated 50 year anniversary in 2005).
Elliot Lake (The Jewel in the Wilderness) - see my page 3 for LINKS
This picture is from 1960! The population was over 22,500 back then when the Uranium Mining Industry was in
its Hey Days. Now the population is listed at 13,500. The mines have all closed. Apparently there are more
economically viable uranium supplies from western Canada and South America.
I heard news the other day that the price of Uranium is at an all time high!
Here's a birds eye view of the town today. Lots of Lakes in the region and around town. This is a great place to
be if you like the outdoors. Miles and Miles of ATV trails and snowmobile trails in this area. Some pretty good
fishing especially if you go north of town or even west of town and go off the beaten path a bit. Even the easy
to reach lakes right in town can be fun to fish. I have fished for small mouth bass in Dunlop Lake, Esten Lake
and Depot Lake. There are good boat launch facilities on these lakes and they are minutes from town. You can
catch your limit of bass in Dunlop within an hour easy. I have more info and ideas and lures in my fishing
pages.

Above to the right pictured.
This is Rooster Rock as shot
from the north end of Quirke
Lake..not far from the boat
launch. This area is being
planted with trees and re-
forested. The Cottage Lot
development project is well
underway now on both Quirke
Lake and nearby Dunlop Lake.

Other lakes in the area are in
the planning stages. McCarthy
Lake and Pecors Lake among
others.

These areas were crown land
but the city got special
permission to develop them as
private lots. This was part of the
plan to rejuvenate THE CITY OF
ELLIOT LAKE and surrounding
areas after the mines all closed
in the mid nineties.
From what I hear, the project is
more successful than people
thought it would be!

THIS IS THE LITTLE WHITE RIVER WHICH RUNS FROM NORTH OF ELLIOT LAKE DOWN TOWARDS LAKE HURON
AND THE TOWN OF IRON BRIDGE. IT IS VERY PICTURESQUE. It has trout in it. There are some areas that are
more productive than others. I don't know the River very well but I have some hunches where to go fishing on
it. You can follow this river along its course; if you follow the "deer trail" road. I definitely plan to do some fly
fishing in this river..but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
BLACK BEARS..SUCH AS THE ONE
IN THE CENTER OF THIS PICTURE;
DO COME INTO TOWN FROM TIME TO
TIME. THEY DON'T SEEM TO EVER
BOTHER ANYONE!

In this birds eye photo you can see Elliot Lake itself to the top.
The Apartment buildings toward the north, near the lake are about 9 stories high. We have no skyscrappers in town.

The oval track is near ELSS  (Elliot Lake Secondary School).

There are no real cottages or lake front houses on Elliot Lake itself. There is, however, a development underway for a
Condominium complex down by Spine Beach area and near the lake shore. I think it may have over 100 units in the plan.

I don't have a-lot of details, but I do see some evidence of work underway to widen one of the trails.
BELOW a  bear
successfully found a
snack. He tore into
my neighbours
garbage! Later..he
walked through my
back yard. I could
have got much
closer to this
bear..but I was
reluctant because a)
it isn't my property
and b) I don't think
bears like being
disturbed when they
are having a snack!
There are a few houses
and/or camps along this
picturesque Little White
River area but only a few
that I could count on one
hand.

For the most part, it is
rugged and natural and
peaceful with not too many
humans or human dwelling
places to be seen.

It looks like a real nice place
to fish for trout with a fly rod!
Below: recreational boating and fishing around Lake Lauzon on a nice sunny and calm
day. Note the 4 x 4 posts in my boat. I was going in by boat to build a small outhouse on
my lot.
there's more ----------->
Little White River (North and West of Town)
February 1, 2007. Just a little
update about the Uranium
situation as concerns Elliot Lake.

A mineral exploration company,
PELE Mountain Resources is
currently working on claims north
of town here.

Apparently there may be as much
as 33 million pounds of uranium
in this area still in the ground.
There is an article in the Elliot
Lake Standard. Try the link
http://www.elliotlakestandard.ca
and look for the story dated Wed
Jan 24, 2007. the Story Id is
374547.

There is reference as well to rare
earth discoveries of hard to find
minerals such as lanthanum.
