Field Day(2009 and 2008) This year the Elliot Lake Amateur Radio
Club operated Field Day from a nice radio location. We were high up
on a hill overlooking town; the Fire Tower area. We had a tent set up
with battery power and an AC generator to help power our lighting
equipment. It was a test of our emergency radio equipment and our
Radio Communications skills and equipment. In case of emergency,
we can mobilize and put our equipment into use to serve the
community. It is also a fun and social event. Field Day is a 24 hour
operating period.
This was our main operating tent. We manned this post for 24 hours straight and made contacts with other amateur radio stations throughout North
America.
This was our secondary station location. This station communicated using digital modes of communication. We used a portable lap top computer and HF
radio and battery power. The antenna was a simple wire dipole antenna strung up in the nearby trees. Despite the fact that the antenna was low in the
trees and the operator was using low power (ie 20 watts), contacts were made all over North America and into Europe.

Grace VE3HZB and Dave did some operating on Saturday June 27 2009. When
Sunday rolled around (5AM or thereabouts) the rain came and it was pretty
blustery up on the hill. We folded up the tent early and we were all pretty well
soaked. I always find it rains or storms during Field Day weekend.
Besides the Tent and the camper, we set up another Post up in the large gazebo on the Fire Tower hill. John VE3URS was trying to make some 6 meter
contacts. 6 was open and so was 10 meters during the days leading up to Field Day and during Field Day weekend as well. Maybe next year we will bring a
nice little 6 meter yagi or quad. I was working on a 15, 10 and 6 meter quad but did not get it finished in time for the contest.

This is a friend of VE3URS. You do not necessarily have to have a
ham radio station to participate in Field Day. We can put you to work
as an installer/pack mule or cook!
Some of the Elliot Lake Amateur Radio Club members here in pictures at the Field Day site. We all operated the one station (mainly) in the TENT.
There was a Digital "Computer Communications" station manned 24 hours in the Travel Trailer.
The main parking lot at the Fire Tower in Elliot Lake. Note: Visitors to Elliot Lake are
certainly welcome to drive up to the Fire Tower Lookout and view the scenery and the
lakes and forests of the area. It is a real nice view and kids can play in the playground.
