MY LOW IMPACT LOW PROFILE ANTENNA SYSTEM (my new QTH in the city called for a small ..low headache ..FUN..antenna system.. this is
what I came up with! So far..the Inverted L is working very well on the 80 and 40 meter bands. In the spring..my TGM Miniquad is set to grace the
top of the tower.
BELOW IS THE SKETCH OF THE 40 METER INVERTED L FED WITH COAX ..SOMETHING LIKE A J POLE. IT WORKS GOOD AS A MONOBAND ANTENNA.

I briefly..tried my INVERTED L with a coax feed -- A 40 METER J POLE ANTENNA (IT WORKED!)
|
Below is my MFJ tuner. I stuck on some labels and marked the
tuner control postions for the various bands. There are two wires
comming into the tuner. The first wire is going to the tuner ground
along with the copper ground strap. The Ground wire comes from
the base of the tower outside. The inverted L is the wire to the
right and has a red plastic sleeve on it to indicate to me that this is
the "hot wire".
I use aligator clips for quick disconnect. If there is a storm; I can
disconnect the antenna.

This 27 or 28 ft tv tower is self supporting. The house bracket you see near the bottom of the photo has not been in use the 2 years now that the tower has been up. - In very heavy winds..I have noticed a bit of twisting of the tower. MY little mini beam now graces the top of the tower. I plan to add a support YARD arm brace to the tower
Note how close the vertical wire is to the tower. Despite that ..the inverted L antenna works well. The inverted L is about 99 ft long overall. I did try loading it against the tower as a mono band 40 meter J pole antenna. It worked. Didn't leave it in that configuration for very long ..but it did work. SWR curve was good too!
Soon (July 07)..I will have my little hf mini beam up at the top of the tower. I plan to do a little bracing of the tower so that it does not twist in the wind.
What I like about this tower is that it would be easy to dig out of the ground and it is not really all that high. It does get my antenna up above the roof tops and Iam on a pretty good hill here in Elliot Lake. One of the better vhf locations here in the area.

The inverted L came down when I put the
little mini beam up.
As I said earlier..Im going out to spend a
few bucks and buy an automatic remote
tuner and put up some sort of inverted L in
the spring.
Another option..might be a top loaded
vertical (homebrew) with the automatic
tuner at the base to tweak the swr to low
values for the rig and feedline.
Top loading is supposed to be the most
efficient. I heard a fellow using a top loaded
80/40 33 ft vertical and he had a pretty
good signal on 75.
I'll post some pictures when I get the new
antenna for the low bands working.
With this antenna going right into the shack to
the tuner..I do get some rf feedback into the
audio of the transmit sometimes. That is why Iam
going to a remote tuner outdoors. I want to keep
the rf away from my flesh too!
The tuner right at the antenna is what I want to
do. For the little mini beam..there are some swr
issues and I might use a tuner with a bypass
switch for the coax. The tuner would be ok in the
shack.
I TRIED AN EXPERIMENT. A J POLE USING
THE TOWER AND A WIRE SPACED ABOUT
A FOOT AWAY FROM IT.
IT WORKED. NOT MULTIBAND
HOWEVER..SO I DIDNT USE IT MUCH...BUT
IT DOES WORK.
MOST OF THE WIRE WAS HORIZONTAL.
AS I RECALL THE SWR CURVE WAS
PRETTY GOOD.
