Here is a Ranger RCI 2980 transceiver. The meters were damaged and here I was trying some meters I had around here. They worked but did not
look right..when installed in this transceiver..so I had to order the originals at $15 each meter from USA Ranger parts distributor.
The fellow also wanted me to look at the power output as he felt it was too low so I did test it with my BIRD WATTMETER AND DUMMY LOAD.
I ALSO PUT THE RADIO on my HP Spectrum analyser. It has not been calibrated in likely some time..but it gives a good relative indication of
whether the radio is putting out harmonics or spurious emmissions. This radio checked out as pretty clean.
I dont have a service manual for it and I likely could not fix such things as the PLL circuitry, nor would I be willing to modify it for higher than legal
power ..NOR WOULD I MODIFY A CB TO WORK OUTSIDE THE NORMAL CB CHANNELS..(this ranger does however). I will work on the ranger but I
would do mods on the PLL or frequency determining components.
The kind of repairs I would do are things like meter replacements, tweaking of some of the tuned circuits (according to instructions if available)
and I could likely repair a receiver that went dead (blown IC or transistors)..transmittter problem ie low output or NO OUTPUT.
PLL (phase lock loop, synthesizer problems or crystal mixing problems I would likely not be able to fix economically because I have not worked
on these things before and It would take a long time for me to fix. and I may not have the parts either. I dont have many PLL chips in stock.
I do have some broken CBs for parts and plenty of transistors and diodes and some older communications ICs.

ELLIOT LAKE to Sudbury, Espanola, North Bay, Pembrooke, Lanark County, Ottawa, Smiths Falls. Smith Falls Flea Market each spring (ham radio
flea market in early May. Ottawa/CARP flea market early September. Ottawa area, Eganville area about 3 times per year during the warm months.
NOTE: BESIDES CBs, I can fix older stereo accessories and stereo amps. I go on a case by case basis.

available and from what you tell me is wrong. I see if I can get the parts that could be required..then I quote you an estimate.

| Actually, the RANGER RCI 2980 is fairly nice to work on. The parts are all numbered on the circuit board and I can "find my way" around the circuit fairly easily. The parts like transistors and ICs I have in stock in my shop here. When it comes to the more modern radios with dense circuitry and/or surface mount..I really cannot work on them because I dont have the parts and I dont have any specialized tools. I stick with the older stuff mainly. Stuff that I have worked on previously. 73 Earl VE3AB PS... I also consult on repairs. Many times for FREE!! People send me emails and photos and I help them repair the item themselves. Sometimes I have to send them parts or help them analyse circuitry.
