Sometimes VE3KPK (Ken) here in Elliot Lake comes out for an
afternoon fish with me. We mostly fish for a few hours in the late
afternoons. Lately, we have been catching Pike and Small Mouth
Bass. Summer the Lake Trout go down deep and (I find) its more fun
to go around the rocky and weedy areas and fish for these other
species. Pound for pound..the S.M. Bass are the most fun to catch (I
find). The Mr. Twister type grubs (bright colors) seem to work best.
Worms are maybe better..but I find the bass swallow them deeply and
I prefer catch and release. Another good bait for sm bass is the small
mepps yellow and black or flourescent and black spinners. Ken did
pretty well last time out with one. FOR SCENT..lately I have used
whole frozen smelts from the grocery store. They tend to get soft and
fall off the hook but they are cheap and I rub the scent on lures and
use a chunk on the hook(s) to give off scent. Worked real good for
pike on a jig this spring for me.

That small mouth bass really put up a heck of a fight. Did some nice jumps!
Up here in Northern Ontario..fishing is BIG. The whole place is physically
BIG TOO! Lots of wide open spaces.
The pike was a little over 5 lbs. I did catch a 20 lb pike about 1.5 years ago
in mid november.
I will be fishing and working at the cottage lot more in warm months..but I
will still get in some ham radio bench time, operating time and
some writing of this ON LINE AND free MAGAZINE..

Me about 11 or 12 years old. Somewhere around 1965 maybe. Uncle George used
to take me out fishing to places like Clayton Lake, Taylor Lake, Fitzroy Harbour and
various spots on the Ottawa River System in the Ottawa Valley. This was a rented
wooden boat. Rented by perhaps Gordy Simms at the east end of Taylor Lake.
NICE SMALL MOUTH..tnx for snapping the picture Ken. Not
many places to catch largemouth bass up here. Smallies are
quite plentiful.

I have a nice little collection of brooks reefer lures. They are good for bass.
Pike have grabbed it as well. The side to side action and slower presentation
can work very well at times .
I first got interested in Brooks Reefers when my dad in the late sixties painted
up a orange colored brooks. He painted it a dull silver. It worked real well for
large mouth bass one day in Clayton lake near Ottawa. We caught some big
ones on his painted reefer. Ever since I have used them. Sometimes..I would
watch a pike follow the brooks real closely moving side to side in sync with
the lure wiggles and then he would open his mouth and clamp down on it.
This year I watched a nice 3.5 pound pike swim up to it as I reeled it in close to
the boat and he grabbed it and swooped off. Brooks reefers are no longer
made but there are similar types of lures out there ..Lazy Ike for example.
I have some large versions of these baits but havent used them much yet.
I think they might work for Musky but these lures are usually retrieved slowly.
Musky often respond to slower presentations. Might be good for walleye.

These 3 brooks were
on ebay. The orange
one my dad painted
silver back in the late
60s..and it worked
real well for LM Bass.
Bass fishing around Elliot Lake is pretty good. Of course there is a fair bit
of fishing pressure from the local community but its not hard to go out and
catch your limit right around town. I find old standard lures work good.
The Mepps nr 3 or nr 4 spinners seem to work good. Ken was using those
the last 2 times we went out and he seemed to do a bit better than me. I
was using the newer slash baits from Rapala, brooks reefer and a lure
called the River Ripper manufactured (by hand) in Lanark County. Actually
the River Ripper..yellow and red dots, caught a nice pike and the largest
smallmouth we caught. I must try and buy another one of these lures.
This is our catch that day. Ken eats
his catch..whereas I usually catch
and release..unless it is badly
hooked.
The big 20 pound pike I caught a
couple of years ago now, I
released back into the lake.
Some days the fishing is a little
hard. Below right... Ken holds up
a nice little pike I caught the
other day.
I also caught a wee small small -
mouth bass..but that was about it
for the day!!
It was a great afternoon of fishing
and I really enjoyed the day even
though it was not a real high yield
trip.
Lately..for Small Mouth Bass...Ken and I have been using these Mepps Black
Fury spinners. Either the number 3 or nr. 4. I tip them with a bit of a frozen smelt
for a bit of extra incentive and scent. Seems to be working most days.
The last trip..however..when the fishing was tought..the jerk bait..or slash bait
..shown in the picture below right..worked to catch the pike and it even caught a
small 7 inch small mouth bass.
The suspending jerk bait ..above..looks real good in the water. The
feathered treble hook even looks like a tail. I jerk it through the water and
then suspend it. It looks like a real minnow which is dashing around and
suspending a bit then dashing off again.
much more to come in my fishing pages as I work on
them and take more pictures during upcomming trips.

Hamelectronicsmagazine.com is primarily about ham radio and associated
electronics and antennas..stuff like that. But I can't afford another web site right now
dedicated to FISHING..so here are some fishing pages.
I used YAHOO SMALL BUSINESS web services and have unlimited web space and
traffic handling capability. I also have another domain name called www.sparetime.biz
I would like to sell that domain and generate a bit of revenue.
I moved up here to Elliot Lake in 2005 and I still enjoy fishing. I tend to catch bigger fish up
here. Not as many but generally quite a bit bigger on average. This certainly applies to the
Northern Pike.
Another nice pike I caught right in town.
Back in Ottawa, I never caught a pike as big as this one! I had the weigh scale
on him as you can see and it was bouncing between 19 and 20 lbs. So I called
him a 20 lber.
I live released him(or her?) back to produce some more little ones.
I caught this pike in mid november on a real nice indian summers day.
Even though this is "northern ontario" up here in Elliot Lake..people have
been telling me the fall and winter weather is not as cold as it used to be.
Anyways..I took advantage of the nice late fall day and caught this one while
casting a perch colored spoon around the weeds. It was a fairly small spoon
but the big pike grabbed it! No real skill. I was in the right spot at the right time.
This is very similar to the lure that I caught my big pike with. Mine did
not have the red plastic tube piece on the treble hook. The spoon has a
definite curve and seems to work well.
