ELLIOT LAKE 50 YEAR CELEBRATION 1955 TO 2005
The town was carved out of the Canadian Shield in order to support the Uranium
requirements of the cold war era. The uranium here in this area is plentiful (I hear) but
the grade is not as good as in other areas. New mines in Saskatchewan and elsewhere
combined with other global factors rendered the mines up here (there were at least 11)
not economically viable. The last mine closed around 1994. Elliot Lake needed to be
re-invented. Because there were beautiful forests and hills and many many lakes in
this area; Elliot Lake started the Lake Shore Development Project. See the 3 important
links below I have provided for you to learn more about this growing community.
LINKS to check out....> (local area Web Sites)
Elliot Lake .com is the main web site I always use.
It has the classified ads and a real good COMMUNITY
FORUM. The people on the forum are very helpful.
You can join the forum and ask questions and
research for yourself. Anything significant that
happens in town is usually well discussed on that
forum.

ELLIOT LAKE RETIREMENT LIVING is the non profit
corporation that was set up to help get this small city back
on its feet after the mines closed. It offers tours and good
affordable houses and apartments.

THE LAKE FRONT DEVELOPMENT corporation is really
starting to pay dividends. Cottage lot development has
gone very well. I don't know that much about it but I have
seen some plans in the building inspectors office and
things look very promising indeed. I took a tour of one of
the waterfront houses. Very nice! More info--->

HERE I am to blow my own horn!
I have researched the area for about 2.5 years now.
I have bought a house and a waterfront property
myself. I also owned waterfront property near Ottawa.
I can give advice and even a tour of the area
http://www.earlandrews.com ($10.00 per hour)- a great
price (I'am semi-retired now)

Below: Randy Bauchman is "taking care of business". He appeared along with Rick Emmit at the July 1st
(CANADA DAY celebrations here in town. This was 2005 our 50 th anniversary.
RICK EMMET opened for Randy at the CANADA DAY CELEBRATION. SPECIAL INTEREST NOTE: THE BUILDING BEHIND
THE BANDSTAND IS NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION. It will be the new Doctors Building/MEDICAL CENTER. THE DOCTOR
SHORTAGE IS A BIT OF A CONCERN UP IN NORTHERN ONTARIO and in fact even in big cities in Ontario. Myself; within
a year of moving to Elliot Lake; both my wife and I found a Family Doctor.
I have added another page of pictures of Elliot Lake (including pics of the visiting bear) ..CLICK HERE TO GO THERE!

You can visit the site and see the map(s) of the
trails around town.
THERE WERE AROUND 4,000 or so people at this Canada Day
celebration in the lower Mall - downtown Elliot Lake. July 1, 2005.
MARCH 4, 2008. UPDATE: PELE Mountain Corp is opening an office soon in one of the strip malls here
in town. IF..and it certainly is IF..there is to be a uranium mine..it will be in the current exploration area in
past the golf course. I will be trying to find a link and a map of this little area and I will post it here.
-- A new mine might be in the works in 2013 or so. It might employ about 200 people. By the sounds of
it..it would be a much smaller operation than what has been happening in this town previously.
Mining is a non renewable resource. Elliot Lake wants to remain diversified and will certainly not put all
its eggs in one basket. Seniors and retirees and cottage lot lovers will still remain the staple of this little
economy.
Black Bears do
occasionally wander in to
town to look for an easy
meal.

What I do is I freeze
anything in my freezer that
might attract bears.
Leftover meats and fish.
In the three years Ive
been here, I have never
had a bear break into my
garbage cans.

I live fairly close to the
bush and there are strips
of bush nearby.

So far, I have not heard of
any bear/human direct
encounters or close
encounters here in Elliot
Lake.
