Popular places to fish close to town. Elliot Lake -- Ive caught Pike, Perch and Ive seen Lake Trout being caught through the ice. I know there are Small Mouth Bass as well. Ice fishermen all and shacks are quite common out by Spine Beach. I haven't had any luck there ice fishing but I'm not a serious ice fisherman. Minnows for ice fishing seems to be considered almost necessary. Fishing from the dock in the spring for bullhead, perch and the odd pike out by the hwy 108. Depot Lake -- Ive caught Pike, Perch, Small Mouth Bass. This is the Lake you cross on the hiway 108 as you are headed for town. Lots of pressure at the boat launch. Seems like many people fish there from shore. I think there would be lake trout and rainbow trout as well. Lots of small fish ie rock bass and perch can be caught from shore. Quirke Lake-- Ive caught Small Mouth Bass. There is a catch and release policy for Lake Trout in this lake. Boat launch near the old panel mine (Panel Road). I think there is walleye in Quirke Lake as well. Dunlop Lake-- Seems to have a very healthy population of Small Mouth Bass. You can easily catch your limit within an hour. There is a fun tournament each summer now for s.m. bass. It is run from Dunlop Lake Lodge and the Trading Post. (note: the Elliot LakeTrading Post on hiway 108 as you enter town is a good source of live bait/tackle and they will give you tips as well on where to fish if you're visiting town. Dunlop lake has a lot of nice cottage development and a real nice boat launch as well. Other species of fish are walleye and lake trout. I don't think there are any pike in this lake. Esten Lake -- Fairly good boat launch and is just a couple of kilometers from town. I've only fished there one time but seems to be popular and Ive seen lots of small mouth bass on peoples stringers and comming out of the live wells. Lake Trout and Rainbow trout and Pike and perch as well. There was a picture in the Elliot Lake Standard of a fellow holding up a big 19 lb pike. He said it was caught in Esten Lake, but people I spoke with said it might have been caught elsewhere. (Sometimes fishermen tell stories to preserve their good fishing spots!). It was a nice sized Pike alright. The Elliot Lake Trading Post has a good assortment of pictures of fish that were caught around the area. Lake Lauzon-- I've fished this lake a half dozen times now. My cottage lot on that lake. I caught a small musky (4lb). There are large musky and large lake trout in that lake. Small Mouth Bass as well. I used worms to catch smallies. I did catch some small mouth on lures but the fishing was slow. When I used worms around the structures I had some decent fishing action. I think a fish finder would be a good idea as this is a large lake and the fish seem scattered. As well..there is fishing pressure on this lake. Lots of cottages and visitors. It is easily accessible from the hiway 17 at Algoma Mills. Flack Lake -- This is in the park north of town. You have to pay to launch your boat. I haven't fished there yet but I plan to. It is fairly good for Lake Trout. It is easily accessible and has a good boat launch. You have to pay to launch your boat here. I have received good comments about the Lake Trout fishing in this lake from the locals. McCarthy Lake-- has two public boat launches. The road is a little rough but there is walleye, pike, s.m. bass and trout in this lake. I was told the better fishing is more easily accessed from the furthest boat launch. A local chap told me that they used to catch walleye every cast in McCarthy (at one time). I went in there one day to check out the road and saw a couple of black bears. Keep in mind the bears may smell the fish in your live well. I purchased a can of bear spray (available from the Elliot Lake Trading Post). I went fishing this year at McCarthy Lake. See my new web page for some photos and general information on the fishing. Spanish and the Spanish River where it flows into Lake Huron. Catfish and Walleye in the spring. Vances Marine rents boats. They will tell you to try the fishing around the "pylons" old log piers that stick out of the water up about 1/2 mile from the boat launch. Sure enough, thats where everyone was fishing and catching walleyes. Be prepared to lose lures or jig heads on all those underwater logs. If I go there again..I'll rig up a special light line that breaks off the sinker and preserves my jig heads. Jigging with a worm and jig works good there. When I was fishing there; the bass season was closed. I did catch a nice small mouth though and let him go. The delta and river mouth area is fairly shallow and should be good for Pike Bass and the odd musky I would think. Serpent River/Serpent Harbour/Lake Huron. Near the village of Sprague. You can launch a boat from the KOA campground. You can also launch at the North Channel Yacht Club off Hiway 17 and there is a public launch to the left of the Yacht club. There is a small boat launch on the Serpent River off River Road just to the west of the reserve but the river is kind of shallow and if the water is high, you may not be able to go very far down stream because of the rapids. There is a real good boat launch into Lake Huron at Algoma Mills and from there you could travel the shore eastward. This harbour bay looks like a good spot for fishing. There are likely Musky, Salmon and just about everything. See my fishing tips page for a picture of a 40.86 pound (world record) Rainbow Trout/Steelhead that was caught in the north shore of Lake Huron (east of Espanola) somewhere. I forgot the name of the place..but there are big ones to be had! Around Blind River : Granary Lake and Bright Lake seem to have good reputations for fishing. I've never fished there myself.
BOAT RENTALS in the Elliot Lake District In Spanish, Vances Marina provides boat launch and rents boats and sells bait. Spanish and the Spanish River is a very popular place to fish. According to the fishing maps Ive seen..it is one of the few places around this area where you can catch a Large Mouth Bass. Spanish River looks to be excellent for Large Mouth because it is relatively shallow with plenty of weedy and stumpy areas. It looks like it might be good for Musky..BUT I have yet to verify that and Ive only fished there one time and that was when bass and musky season was closed. I was told several times this year by various fellows in various towns that the walleye fishing in Spanish this year (2007) was pretty good. It was fairly good last year as well I was told. Dunlop Lake Lodge (north of town) and Mount Lake (furthur north) also rents boats. In Algoma Mills (Lake Lauzon Resort) boat rental and cottage/camp rental is available. OTHER NOTES There are many lodges such as Ten Mile Lodge, Frontier Lodge and others. Some offer fly out fishing trips. Ten mile Lodge has guide service. It is close to some small walk in trout ponds/lakes. If you get a fishing map you will see all the lakes and the fish species are shown on the map. I tend to find that the markings on the fishing maps ..ie when there is a "P" on the map (for Pike) or B for Bass..its like x marks the spot. Try fishing there. It is a good general indicator of a good fishing area. May not always be true but it is a good starting point. Try looking for structure, weed beds, and transitions. Lakes up here are deep and rocky. When there is a transition into a shallow bay with weeds and stumps and rocks (structure) ..that is likely a good spot to try. Just away where it drops off deeper might be good as well for deeper dwelling fish. NOTE: I have found through my travels that the maps don't always tell the full story. McCarthy Lake is not really a good lake for Walleye anymore; even though the map says it has walleye. The Pike seem to have taken over somewhat. One old timer I spoke to not long ago told me he used to catch a walleye every cast in McCarthy. Well now..they arent that common at all.
Elliot Lake OUTFITTERS I think they still have a web site with photos ect. - try googling it. Ten Mile Lake Lodge (north of Dunlop Lake) has fishing guides. - A good source of local information is our local fishing shop (Elliot Lake Trading Post) just opposite Kentucky Fried Chicken as you enter town from the south. I have many times gotten good tips from the sales people there. Lets face it..they want you to fish this area..its good for business. They sell lots of tackle and live bait. - Three guys fishing. They have a web site. - Down in Spanish there is a fellow Rick, who guides in the Spanish River area. (see the link on this page) -There is a fellow who sells live bait on Ottawa Street in Elliot Lake. Blind River there is the rental shop on Woodward Avenue heading north of town. They have tackle and Ive gotten some real good tips from the staff on the local lakes and the fishing. I think they sell bait as well.
