Get some Maps! I was watching the "Real Fishing Show" with Bob
Izumi. Bob has featured Elliot Lake area in several of his shows, and,
in fact, if it were not for his shows, I may not have moved up into this
area. Advertising works!
Anyways, on one of his shows,
the value of topographic maps was
showcased.
By using a map and some good thinking, you can come up
with some good strategies on where to fish.

Sure the easy places ie Dunlop Lake or Esten Lake make for an
enjoyable days fishing, but, for a real taste of adventure, try going
into the wild, Here north of town is where to try. You might need a
good 4 wheel drive truck to go on some of the roads and maybe a 4
wheeler but the rewards could be well worth it.

I myself, am a less serious fisherman..and I prefer puttering around
my waterfront lot and then going out in the evening for a fish, (that
sort of thing).

Generally, you have to go a bit off the beaten path to find some real
spectacular fishing.

Just looking at my map..two places Id like to try are Bark Lake and
Rocky Island Lake. Both are on the Mississagi River system and have
lots of islands to camp on.
They are big lakes and have lots of shoreline. The Trading Post
store/bait shop here in Elliot Lake has bait, tackle and topographic
maps.
NOTES concerning the above mini map of some of the local lakes to Elliot Lake.
o Esten Lake is to the left of Depot Lake (originally there were no cottage lots
planned for Esten Lake, but, the success of the cottage lot project up here has
led to consideration of Esten Lake for lot development.
o the little red areas around some of the lakes indicate either already existing
cottage lots or proposed new developments. In September 2007 I went to
Popeye Lake for a look see and there were recent signs of surveying.

Lake Lauzon and Algoma Mills and Lauzon Creek (flows into Lake Huron) are
indicated at the bottom left hand corner.
o Flack Lake is to the north of Dunlop Lake. Rawhide Lake is at the top of the
map.
Lake Huron (north channel)
Above: a large mouth bass I caught at Clayton Lake (40 miles west
of Ottawa). I am from Ottawa originally. Up here in Elliot Lake there
are no large mouth bass to be caught. The only place there could
be some is in Lake Huron. The lakes up here are often deeper and
colder and have small mouth bass, trout and pike. In all these
weeds I was using my chugg bugg. Another good lure that is
weedless are those hollow plastic frogs with the double hook that
sits flat against the lure body. They work real well.  Have your long
nose pliers handy though...bass tend to inhale it deep sometimes!
ENJOY THE SCENERY!
There are lots of hills and rock outcroppings in this area.
This picture was taken north of Elliot Lake on what they call
the Deer Trail road way.
