Many thanks again Earl. You are far more helpful than the
technical specialist at NTE! I will let you know how it turns
out. It will take a while because I will get some help from a
fellow amateur in Ottawa who is a retired electrical
engineer.
I am not skilled at desoldering on a crowded circuit board.

Al the best in 2010 Earl.
Dear Sir,
I am a new commer to the collection of vintage radios and computers. I was
just surfing the net trying to
find information on how to begin the restoration process. I have 2
Westinghouse H435T5 and H436T5 that I
want to restore. I believe these radios date back to the 50's. I found your web
site and must say this is
the most interesting and detailed site on restoring radios that I have ever
found. What a great job
you have done and are doing.

Thank you for all the hard work in sharing this information!!! Have a great day!!!

Greetings!

I enjoyed visiting your web pages, thank you for sharing the
information.

I too am an inveterate repairer and restorer of electronic
instruments and communications gear.  I've recently started
restoring "newer" ham gear (FT-301D, FT-221R) compared to
thing like dx-50's and Globe Scouts.

I'd enjoy hearing some of your trouble-shooting experiences
with this family of radio gear.  Thanks again for a very nice web
presence.

Hallo Earl, how are you?
I really liked the restyling of your site.
(a ham in Italy)

---->>> stay tuned-- lots more work will be done ..earl ve3ab....
Hello Earl - Thanks for your kind remarks re: my FT-301S  --  Here's the latest ==> I've got it working !!  The problem was that the power connector wasn't wired
according to the schematic...the finals are OK ...  I would like to turn it into a dedicated crystal-controlled WSPR beacon radio using the FIXed crystal
positions.
Hi Earl - I am interested in some 40673 MOSFETs if u still have any. I have a bunch of them in Heathkit rcvrs and 6mt preamps. I wud like 10 if have
that many.
<<< I could not help this fellow out...I only had about 4 or 5 in stock <<< 1 or 2 YES..but 10 too much for me to supply. >>>>

----->> RCA discontinued the 40673 back in the early 80s. I remember reading a clip about this in QST. The 40673 was a very popular part in ham
radio projects from the pages of QST and other magazines. I wish I had thousands of these parts..I'm sure I could sell them!

I still sell the odd part here and there..to help fellows out when they need a few parts to fix or build something..but for larger orders I would
recommend places like: Scotts Radio, Dans Small Parts, kits and parts dot com (W8DIZ) and Hendricks to name a few. These are the kinds of
places where I buy parts. ----->>> 10 dual gate mosfets type 40673 I would not have that many. I only have a few and I'm finding it hard to buy more.
Dans Small Parts in USA no longer sells to Canada so one of my favourite sources of supply is now gone.
For Small "wee orders" of a few
parts to tide you over ..or ..help you
with a project..

I am your guy.

FOR BIGGER ORDERS I recommend..
Dans Small Parts..USA or W8DIZ..qrp
kits and parts..Hendricks..or look up
QRPARCI links for parts supplliers.

I am QRPARCI nr 3757 since 1974
bought my 1st Argonaut in late 74.
LINK TO MY PARTS LISTING:   3 PAGES of parts and part
numbers.
I CAN TEST Some parts as well before I send them out.
(
I measure hfe and match diodes for free) .. I (think) ! -->>
--->> I am the only fellow here in Canada selling parts
specifically for ham radio projects. It is a small market. I
am a retired federal civil servant who took early retirement
and have been doing the web pages, stories and selling
parts as a retirement activity. NO REAL PROFIT ABOVE
and beyond my expenses. NOT YET ANYWAYS.

Hi Earl

Ok,  thanks for the good news... One major problem less as FL-34 is
found, I use to listen to news from HF
broadcasters when found in frequency, I usually use 7MHz  for most ham
contacts.

I am going to use Paypal and will add one $ more for the FB-43-101
ferrite beads, guess I get
12 and half for 8 cents each :)
So after this email going to send the payment for the FL-34 to this
email reply-address.
I believe it comes here without insurance, I have had some small orders
in Ebay and any of those isn't lost.

Regards Kari B(identity protected..he is in Europe))
I have some junker
radios for parts.((parted out radios))
KENWOOD TS 780 faulty logic control board but
the rest of the rig worked fine. for parts (inquire)
IC290A,
IC720
HW16,HR10B, HW7 some parts avail
FT301 (two parts rigs to draw on and quite a few
extra TIL 306/308 displays that I sell (used tested
good pulls $8 ea)
Argonaut 509/505 and 515 (I tested and installed a
new set of finals in my 515 (parts I stock) I now get 9
watts output.
((note Ten Tec still sells parts for these older radios
as well!))

METER REBUILDING..I bought a bunch of small
wee meter parts (springs, movements, and
hardware)..I can maybe help out there. I want to try
working on meters eventually myself.
I went out and bought 10 of these rather rare and long
obsolete TA7089M (Toshiba) voltage regulator ICs for my
FT301 power supply and radio.

I can supply a few to other hams for $9.00 each (it cost me
about $6 with shipping for these parts)..I work on a very small
markup for parts.

I BUY PARTS AS WELL TO SWAP OR SELL (very reasonable)
to homebrewers, hams and would be hams and SWLs.
I can do work on older solid state stuff. I don't work on radios
with PLL circuitry  NOR do I do alignments. Just repairs/fixes.
OLDER stuff that can be mailed back and forth economically.
Stuff I have parts to repair. OLDER solid state very late 60s,
1970s and early 80s. or perhaps QRP rigs/accessories.

I work on small ham radio or audio accessories as well.
Things like preamps, converters, some CB stuff ..that kind of
thing. I can do some mods or undo some mods. QRP rigs and
rigs/electronic items built from KIT FORM..are also things I
work on an HAVE SPARE PARTS FOR.

FREE ESTIMATES..NO BENCH FEES FOR JUST LOOKING
AT THE ITEM..EITHER.

$10 PER HOUR BENCH RATE IS ABOUT THE LOWEST

My simple operating area...FT221R 2 meter multimode, an FTdx401 that I fixed up, an
FT301D..main rig, Astron RS10 power supply that I have gutted and modded and
rebuilt into a 20 amp supply based on RS20, A homebrew metered 5 Amp supply
LM317 and TIP36C pnp pass transistor (as per arrl handbook), an automatic antenna
tuner that tunes either my heavily modified HF2V vertical or the TGM hybrid mini
beam for 20,15, 10 and 6. not shown: TT 6 meter transverter for FT221R (Ihave 3 of
these TT transverters and I repair them), and my Argonaut 505, 509, 515 and 405
amp are not in the picture. Also..I have a Galaxy R530 for broadcast band listening
and swling.  The Radio Shack receiver I bought at a garage sale and tested it out
and then sold it at a ham radio flea market later on.
I buy parts. HERE are some of the Motorola MV1662 varicap diodes that I bought from
ebay. I bought 600 of them! A bulk buy. Normally..I don't buy large quantities of parts
but this time I did. I tested them on a homebrew tester and they test genuine. See my
MV1662 page w/data sheets graphs and info.
I can do wiring jobs as well on connectors. Here I am wiring up another plug
for powering my FT301D with an external supply (other than the FP301). I have
a collection of plugs and pins and miscellaneous. I keep alot of stuff around.

JUST ONE LITTLE CORNER OF THE

Wow the pictures are great. I will work on it tomorrow. (((I helped this fellow with his TT 405
qrp amplifier))) (I took pictures of my circuit board layout so he could do repairs))

I had the manual that I downloaded from somewhere.

When I get this amp working I will let you know what I wind up using for the transistors.

I DO FREE SERVICES FOR HAMS AND POTENTIAL HAMS. I send out pdf files of manuals and I

KEEPS ME BUSY..OCCUPIED AND SEEMS TO BE DEVELOPING A VERY POSITIVE KARMA FOR
ME!!!! ---
I buy from qrp suppliers and from ebay when I get a good
deal for bulk components.
Some "highlights" of my components and prices:

NE602AN  8 pin dip mixer chip  $1.90 each (W8DIZ = $2 ea)
CA3160AE $1.95 each (hard to get chip) qrp wattmeter proj
T50 series 40 cents each (can be sent in a letter)
MRF476/2SC2075 17 db xsistor $5 +++see note below

Scottky diodes pin diodes zeners including 5 watts I am
ever expanding my inventory.

*** I dont have great quantities of parts but I have a fairly
large variety and if you need something for QRP or older
solid state rig..I just might have it..ve3ab@rac.ca email

I can measure hfe using my V.O.M. or a test jig I made for
larger transistors (as per the qrp pops page. I can
measure diodes ect to match them for you as well as
transistors ie "a pair of finals" for a qrp rig.

Measurements ie: hfe, diode checks, test of toroid/ferrite
all FREE SERVICE. Used pull parts..I test whereever
possible.
NOTE: I have just started building a new test jig
in my lab to test out opto-electronics devices. IE common
cathode, common anode displays and unmarked parts or
parts that are marked with a proprietary part nr.
CONNECTORS, KNOBS, CRYSTALS AND CHASIS
HARDWARE SEEMS TO BE IN DEMAND THE MOST.

SEMICONDUCTORs and ICs much less so. I have sent
some of these items out to other hams. I have no more
crystals for the FT301 (or at least ..very few I can spare)
Some of my crystals have crapped out lately!!!

Brian Carling AF4K (he sells crystals and he can perhaps
help you out) he has a web site. I had to buy some FT301
crystals from him lately.
HERE are some used TIL 306s and TIL 308s. I sell in small quantities to hams
or students or would be hams, SWLs that kind of thing. Here I am testing the
TIL readouts in my FT301 rig. I put a green dot label on the good ones. I sell
these good used pulled parts at $8 each which is a far cry what they are
going for new surplus. I have some other older display parts. I try and buy
them whenever I see them at ham flea markets ect.
Older Components..ie discontinued transistors, dual gate mosfets ect.. I can help sometimes but supplies are limited....>>>
I buy busted broken damaged rigs. I some-times get them going again. Other
times..I can removed subassemblies and sell off the parts (at very reasonable
prices) to other hams who fix up radios. Alot of times..it is a sentimental kind of
thing. ***** typically...people (hams mostly) who want to keep or assemble the
first novice radio station they used to have...or want to keep dads old radio
going..or something like that.

------>>> My $10 per hour bench rate is for older gear ..the kind I am familiar
with, can easily or have easily worked on and I have parts for it. FT301,
Argonaut 505-515, other CW only rigs ie QRP rigs (hw8 ect).

I ALSO BUY PARTS (whenever I can) for the older nostalgic rigs.
$10.00 per hour is for things like fixing a circuit board..or two or three
(what ever)..plug in boards for the FT301 are done this way.

I don't have a bench set up for ALIGNMENTS YET. My old test
equipment is not calibrated ect..and it would take me a LONG TIME to
set up and learn the procedures ect...    I can do FIXING SOMETHING
..TO GET IT UP AND RUNNING AGAIN..ie Fixes to gear.
Hi Earl

Thanks for the parts. The power supply is up and running again. The
regulation has always been good. 13.83V no load and 13.7v full load with a 100
watts radio. It gives me 10-15 watts more than another power supply by
keeping up the voltage.

Thank you for the service to Amateur Radio operators.

Kind Regards

I HAVE BEEN SENDING OUT PARTS OVER
SEAS and to U.S.A. by an economic mail
post method.

I send items (small items like transistors,
ICs, diodes ect) packaged as light and in as
THIN an envelope or SMALL BOX as
possible. (less than 2 cm high low cost).

**** this    "time tested"  method I use costs
(example): to Australlia $9.35 small packet
INTERNATIONAL AIR or $6 europe.

The arrangment I make with the buyer for
items ..I will send them..NO GUARANTEES
on shipping for these low prices..so the risk
(small risk) is with the buyer.

**** I know it sounds "risky" BUT..I have had
zero problems with this arrangement and my
shipments have always gone through
*****
this is "OK"
for small shipments..and that is what I
do..ECONOMY IS THE KEY WORD.

IF you want a TRACKING NUMBER AND
INSURANCE THAT COSTS EXTRA. but for
wee orders like I do..often not required.
