FISHING..around Elliot Lake and the North Shore (Blind River area)-- also the north shore of Lake Huron..ie Spanish and Serpent River areas.

Took me a while ..but I finally got the
knack of catching Lake Trout up here.
I have been catching pike and bass
(small mouth bass) but I havent had
much luck with trout.
This especially holds true for Lake
Trout.
I have seen lots on my fish finder but
havent got them to bite.
I mostly jig for them with a worm and a
fire red knuckle ball jig. I did catch
one this way but I have found a much
more productive jigging technique.
Thats what I caught this one on in
about 40 ft of water out on McCarthy
Lake. late spring 2007.
Lately ..I have been asking local
fishermen about Lake Trout fishing
and have picked up new techniques
and ideas.
I like to fish with light lines and
jigging techniques. You don't cover
as much water and it may be less
productive than the down rigger
method or lead trolling method..but I
like light line fishing even in deep
water for lakers and other fish.
I hope to develop better techniques
and methods and some how become
a bit of a master at this!!! A challenge I
guess.
The knuckle ball jig head is the one I
use. It is good but lacks a second
eyelet to allow easy connection of a
stinger hook.
There are some jigs with the big eyes
(Ive seen them at Zellers) with the
second eyelet to allow for a stinger
hook to be easily attached.
This winter...I plan to modify my jigs by
setting up my drill press and putting
in a small extra eyelet in each of my
jigs. I will use high strength expoxy.
The extra eyelet at the bottom of the
knuckle ball jig will be for easy
attachment of a stinger hook.
I plan to make up my own stingers
with slightly larger hooks (for better
hook up and red hooks)- I went out
and recently bought all the materials I
need.

Nice chunky pike
caught spring 2007 at the Elliot Lake
Boat Launch right
here in town. I caught 3 at the boat launch that
spring. Pike will often take small lures in the
spring. I caught a couple on plastic worms. The
plastic worms I like have 3 hooks embedded in
them. I roll them in worm scent. Works to catch
bullhead as well.

The big hot spot is Spanish for spring
Walleye. I have recently spoke to one
of the owners of Blue Heron Resort.
They are pretty well booked up for the
first 4 weeks of the season.
She told me the fishing was
exceptional this past season. I heard
this from all the local fishermen around
here.
On the map above are check marks and notes where the boat launches are located. These are the common ones and I
have myself launched at all of them with exception of Flack Lake. Flack Lake is in the Park and is a good spot to go catch
Lake Trout. You pay per launch or get a season pass.
You can buy a fishing map at the Elliot Lake Trading Post. The fishing map does not have all the correct fish species
indicated.
There are now some Pike in many of the Lakes such as McCarthy, Dept :Lake (4 lakes in that chain); Elliot Lake, Esten Lake
and perhaps Quirk (Im not sure about Quirke Lake for Pike.
I myself, fish for Walleye in Lake Huron. There are some lakes with walleye such as Dunlop and McCarthy but the numbers
are not really all that high. Some of the other lakes may have some Walleye as well. Elliot Lake is the exception (as far as I
know) but you always hear stories that someone caught a Walleye there some day but it seems to be the exception.
Almost all of the lakes around town have one dominant species and that is Lake Trout. This year,2010, I have done some ice
fishing with a group of other fellows and we almost always only catch lake trout.
Some of the lures I have been using for lakers are jig heads tipped with a piece of minnow and jigged. Sometimes, the jig is
still near or on the bottom and I get bites. One time..I left my rod unattended and it quickly dissappeared throught the hole!
I later got it back with another line.
I will post some pictures of the jig heads I have been using this winter and plan to continue using while out boating. I like
jigging. Drifting in the light breeze and jigging the bottom for lakers. I have a hand operated down rigger..but that seems
more like work to me. I enjoy the light tackle methods.
LAKE HURON..around this north shore district has
some fine fishing. The walleye fishing has really been
good the past few years in the spring. Any of the
rivers that run into Lake Huron will be very good
fishing for walleye. Hot spots..Spanish and Serpent
River mouth.
You can Launch a boat at two public boat launches for
free. One is just west of the Serpent River
campground (village of Sprague) (just to the east of
the North Channel Yacht Club) and the other boat
launch is at Algoma Mills. Also in Algoma Mills is Lake
Lauzon Resort (boats, launch, cabins, tackle) and if
you just want to launch your boat in Lake Lauzon, the
beach area has a boat launch. The other boat Launch
in Lake Lauzon is North of the town of Blind River.
The Blind River has decent Pike, Bass and some
Walleye. I have never fished there myself and I dont
know where the boat launch is but the rental center
(Woodward Avenue going North out of town) sells
tackle and I have spoken to the staff there many times
and they have given me lots of good fishing tips and
they sell some good tackle including lake trout
spoons that work well.

This is my best little lake trout so far. The smaller ones are fairly scrappy. The larger ones less so.
This is a real nice little trout about 19 inches long. I did not weigh him and I only held him up to my
ruler in the boat. I did not want to over handle him.
I released this trout back into the lake. When I catch one that is badly hooked I will keep the fish; but
mostly I catch and release.
A fish finder is almost a must for jigging for Lake Trout. They congregate in schools. Even when you do find them and jig for them..you need to be
patient. They don't always bite. With my white tube jig and minnow combo..however..this year ..in the warm months and afternoons..I have been
catching at least one Laker each time out. I hope to land more and bigger fish as time goes on. ONE of these days I will catch my limit..3 in one
day!
Sorry for the poor resolution of this
picture..i will be replacing it soon. It
was meant to show the depth 69.8 ft
with fish on the fish finder. The lake
trout tend to be near the bottom. I
usually locate the schools of fish and
set up a drift and dangle my white jig
and smelt rig under their noses. I often
(not always) get bites.

I'm always working on my pages. I dabble with them
daily. It is a hobby in itself.
I use the Yahoo Small Business Web service. These
pages cost me about $15 per month. I pay for this
service out of my own pocket and without
advertising. I make the odd buck here and there by
selling ham radio parts or fixing something for
someone. It is more a hobby than a business.
Keeps the mind occupied doing these web pages.
If you wish to make pages of your own please feel
free to contact me and I can give you tips.

I don't guide any more. I found the insurance for fishing guide service would outstrip
the money I would earn!! That being said..if you are in the Elliot Lake area and have no
boat and/or want someone to go fishing with you to show you a few spots; you can
always give me a call at 705-848-9486. I'm always looking for a fishing trip.
Ive learned the area up here and I have bought and sold properties both privately and
through real estate agents. I know the waterfront properties around Elliot Lake and
Blind River. I own a waterfront lot in the Blind River area. I can CONSULT and bird dog
for properties for you. I keep busy doing these odd little jobs and I only charge $10 an
hour. Talk to me over the phone and/or coffee at Timmys and you will learn alot for only
$30 !! You can call me at 705-848-9486 Earl Andrews or write me an email at
ve3ab(at)personainternet.com -- In the winter I fix radios and work on electronics.
This is the jig head I generally use. An
orange and black knuckle ball jig. They sell
them in town here at the Tackle Shop across
from the Kentucky Fried Chicken. They also
sell the white tube jigs I like to use for
jigging for Lake Trout.
Even better than the knuckle ball jig heads, I have found these Northland Fire Ball
Jigs. The chartreuse ones with the big eyes and the two hookup eyes are great.
You can see the customized stinger hook with larger red treble hook for better
hookups. Sometimes the lake trout I caught last year with the standard 'small"
treble hook on the stinger would toss the treble when netted or worse when being
played near the boat.
here is another LINK to
the 2 pages I have
concerning DEEP
FISHING FOR LAKE
TROUT (and other
species).
I use a fish finder then
jig in and around the
schools of fish, mainly
with the white tube and
stinger hook system. I
stuff a frozen smelt or
minnow or cut smelt
right into the tube and
rub the tube to get the
scent right into the lure.
Works for me.
NOVEMBER 23-09, a little over a
week ago I caught my biggest
fish yet. A 20 lb Northern Pike.

this nice fish.
January 2010 NOTE: Some of this jigging
information for Lake Trout is a bit obsolete
now. I am working on a new page on better

MCARTHY LAKE
Going North out of town is a good bet. I dont do that
myself..because my trucks are old, I dont have a
reliable 4 wheeler and the cell phone service doesnt
work up much past Dunlop Lake.
If you have some decent equipment and a good 4
wheel drive truck or 4 wheeler..a trip to remote areas
up the trails and back roads could be most interesting
and the fishing improves due to less pressure.
