FISHING..around Elliot Lake and the North Shore (Blind River area)-- also the north shore of Lake Huron..ie Spanish and Serpent River areas.

Nice chunky pike
caught spring 2007 at the Elliot Lake
Boat Launch right
here in town. I caught 3 at the boat launch that
spring. Pike will often take small lures in the
spring. I caught a couple on plastic worms. The
plastic worms I like have 3 hooks embedded in
them. I roll them in worm scent. Works to catch
bullhead as well.

The big hot spot is Spanish for spring Walleye. I
have recently spoke to one of the owners of
Blue Heron Resort. They are pretty well booked
up for the first 4 weeks of the season.
She told me the fishing was exceptional this
past season. I heard this from all the local
fishermen around here.
On the map above are check marks and notes where the boat launches are located. These are the common ones and I
have myself launched at all of them with exception of Flack Lake. Flack Lake is in the Park and is a good spot to go catch
Lake Trout. You pay per launch or get a season pass.
You can buy a fishing map at the Elliot Lake Trading Post. The fishing map does not have all the correct fish species
indicated.
There are now some Pike in many of the Lakes such as McCarthy, Depot :Lake (4 lakes in that chain); Elliot Lake, Esten Lake
and perhaps Quirk (Im not sure about Quirke Lake for Pike.
I myself, fish for Walleye in Lake Huron. There are some lakes with walleye such as Dunlop and McCarthy but the numbers
are not really all that high. Some of the other lakes may have some Walleye as well. Elliot Lake is the exception (as far as I
know) but you always hear stories that someone caught a Walleye there some day but it seems to be the exception.
Almost all of the lakes around town have one dominant species and that is Lake Trout. This year,2010, I have done some ice
fishing with a group of other fellows and we almost always only catch lake trout.
Some of the lures I have been using for lakers are jig heads tipped with a piece of minnow and jigged. Sometimes, the jig is
still near or on the bottom and I get bites. One time..I left my rod unattended and it quickly dissappeared throught the hole!
I later got it back with another line.
I will post some pictures of the jig heads I have been using this winter and plan to continue using while out boating. I like
jigging. Drifting in the light breeze and jigging the bottom for lakers. I have a hand operated down rigger..but that seems
more like work to me. I enjoy the light tackle methods.
LAKE HURON..around this north shore district has
some fine fishing. The walleye fishing has really been
good the past few years in the spring. Any of the
rivers that run into Lake Huron will be very good
fishing for walleye. Hot spots..Spanish and Serpent
River mouth.
You can Launch a boat at two public boat launches for
free. One is just west of the Serpent River
campground (village of Sprague) (just to the east of
the North Channel Yacht Club) and the other boat
launch is at Algoma Mills. Also in Algoma Mills is Lake
Lauzon Resort (boats, launch, cabins, tackle) and if
you just want to launch your boat in Lake Lauzon, the
beach area has a boat launch. The other boat Launch
in Lake Lauzon is North of the town of Blind River.
The Blind River has decent Pike, Bass and some
Walleye. I have never fished there myself and I dont
know where the boat launch is but the rental center
(Woodward Avenue going North out of town) sells
tackle and I have spoken to the staff there many times
and they have given me lots of good fishing tips and
they sell some good tackle including lake trout
spoons that work well.

A fish finder is almost a must for jigging for Lake Trout. They congregate in schools. Even when you do find them and jig for them..you need to be
patient. They don't always bite. With my white tube jig and minnow combo..however..this year ..in the warm months and afternoons..I have been
catching at least one Laker each time out. I hope to land more and bigger fish as time goes on. ONE of these days I will catch my limit..3 in one
day!
Sorry for the poor resolution of this
picture..i will be replacing it soon. It
was meant to show the depth 69.8 ft
with fish on the fish finder. The lake
trout tend to be near the bottom. I
usually locate the schools of fish and
set up a drift and dangle my white jig
and smelt rig under their noses. I often
(not always) get bites.

I'm always working on my pages. I dabble with them
daily. It is a hobby in itself.
I use the Yahoo Small Business Web service. These
pages cost me about $15 per month. I pay for this
service out of my own pocket and without
advertising. I make the odd buck here and there by
selling ham radio parts or fixing something for
someone. It is more a hobby than a business.
Keeps the mind occupied doing these web pages.
If you wish to make pages of your own please feel
free to contact me and I can give you tips.

I don't guide any more. I found the insurance for fishing
guide service would outstrip the money I would earn!!
That being said..if you are in the Elliot Lake area and have no boat and/or want someone
to go fishing with you to show you a few spots; you can always give me a call at
705-848-9486. I'm always looking for a fishing trip.
Ive learned the area up here and I have bought and sold properties both privately and
through real estate agents. I know the waterfront properties around Elliot Lake and
Blind River. I own a waterfront lot in the Blind River area. I can CONSULT and bird dog
for properties for you. I keep busy doing these odd little jobs and I only charge $10 an
hour. Talk to me over the phone and/or coffee at Timmys and you will learn alot for only
$30 !! You can call me at 705-848-9486 Earl Andrews or write me an email at
ve3ab(at)personainternet.com -- In the winter I fix radios and work on electronics.

the PAGE I have
concerning DEEP
FISHING FOR LAKE
TROUT (and other
species).
I use a fish finder then
jig in and around the
schools of fish, mainly
with the white tube and
stinger hook system. I
stuff a frozen smelt or
minnow or cut smelt
right into the tube and
rub the tube to get the
scent right into the lure.
Works for me.
NOVEMBER 23-09, a little over a
week ago I caught my biggest
fish yet. A 20 lb Northern Pike.

this nice fish.

it is a good bet.

McCarthy Lake is a
nice lake. I caught my
first lake trout there
shortly after I moved
up here.
The road has some
ruts in it and a high
clearance vehicle (ie
pickup truck is good)
2 boat launches on this
lake. The far boat
launch is the best for
fishing (generally)
If you want to see

MCARTHY LAKE
Going North out of
town is a good bet. I
dont do that
myself..because my
trucks are old, I dont
have a reliable 4
wheeler and the cell
phone service doesnt
work up much past
Dunlop Lake.
If you have some
decent equipment and
a good 4 wheel drive
truck or 4 wheeler..a
trip to remote areas up
the trails and back
roads could be most
interesting and the
fishing improves due
to less pressure.
You can catch fish like this fairly
easily right in the larger deeper
lakes in and around town.
This nice little Lake Trout was
caught in Esten Lake.
I highly recommend a fish finder
for locating these fish.
YOU have to find the schools and
the depth they are at.
THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE for
JIGGING FOR THEM.
IF you use a down rigger and
cover alot of water by trolling
..perhaps the fish finder is not as
necessary.
I like to drift slowly and jig around
the bottom in 40 ft or more
(usually).
I have done slow jigging and fast
agressive dashing the jig around.
This Foxee Jig is readily available at tackle shops
and so is the Berkley Gulp Alive bottled product.
It has a juice that I dip my jig in and I also tip the jig
with a chunk of the
white fish fry. Works for Lake Trout.
You can also tip the jig with a minnow or chunk of
minnow.

Dunlop Lake: 2 boat launches SM Bass and Lake Trout and some Walleye
Depot Lake: is actually connected to a chain of other lakes: Lake Trout, Pike, SM Bass and
some Rainbow Trout (the boat launch is quite visible as you head into Elliot Lake from HWY17
..lots of people usually stop and fish there.
Elliot Lake: boat launch and large dock to fish off shore. You will often see people fishing on
the docks. Perch, Pike, Good Lake Trout in certain areas and small mouth bass.
WEB PAGE WORK IS PART OF MY HOBBY ACTIVITY. I work
cheap..($10/hr)..less than minimum wage! I took early retirement. If you want to
learn about web pages, computers, electronics, data bases ect..I will act as tutor
or do WEB PAGE MAINTENANCE from my home (for a very low cost). For small
sessions for non profit clubs or for special sessions to help handicapped, I will
work for FREE from time to time..contact Earl Andrews 705-848-9486 or email me

ok too!

Here we are out ice fishing in early 2010. This was a fairly good day for fishing. Nice
lake Trout..perfect eating size. I picked up some real good tips from these more
experienced anglers and I watched their presentations and lure choices. They
agreed that the Berkley Gulp plastic lures seemed to work pretty well. I found the
foxee jig tipped with a piece of Berkley gulp minnow or grub piece and dipped in that
special oil they use..works good. A piece of minnow works good or better.
BELOW is a Musky habitat Map showing the North Channel of Lake
Huron. Elliot Lake is about 20 miles as the crow flies from Lake Huron.
Musky are found in Lake Huron (great lakes), Spanish River, Serpent
River and Lake Lauzon.
IMPORTANT TIP: I have never met
a game warden while fishing
around Elliot Lake but I have had
the police stop by and talk with me
a couple of times while out on the
lake. Be sure to have a bailing
can/pail, whistle/horn, and floating
flashlight (and your boating card).
The cell phone service is spotty
and at time non existent north of
town (ie Dunlop Lake and north).
South of Elliot Lake and along the
hwy 17 corridor cell phones work
fine.
NOTE: new boat launch at south end of Quirke Lake is in the works.
