Some pictures of my fishing trip to Sault Ste. Marie/ONTARIO-MICHIGAN area. Fishing in the
ST. Marys River which links Lake Huron and Lake Superior
It was cloudy and overcast in August 23  2010, but not raining.  Good day for some Salmon Fishing as it turned out. The locals who fish this area, told me the
preceding hot sunny weather was not all that good for fishing.
There is quite a strong current from the Hydro Dam on the Canadian side. Using 2 oz or 3 oz sinkers and a plug such as Rapala or J Plug (quite popular)..you can
let your line out and it will drift down with the current. Let the line out slowly and jerk it and bounce your sinker off the boulders under the water. I watched three
nice salmon being landed this day. I did not get snagged up once! I was fishing from one of the several of these piers that go out from the main walkway along the
St. Marys River and in behind the large shopping mall "STATION MALL".

Before fishing, I did some observing and some of the fellows gave me tackle tips. There is a tackle shop combined with an auto supply store which is across the
street from Station Mall. I bought some important pieces of tackle..sinkers...three way swivel and a couple of J plugs.
The kids seem to enjoy them selves and there are a number of tourists and spectators both from out of town and locals.
In late August..there is a small salmon derby in this area put on by the Search and Rescue people.
Besides salmon there are Walleyes and the odd Lake Trout and Rainbow trout. Someone told me there were also fresh water
Drum fish around as well.
Some boaters out. Besides fishing off the docks...you can easily access some other nice shore fishing spots in and around the power dam.
US Coast Guard boat and behind that the larger boats going up the locks on the american
side.
Reasonably heavy duty rod and reel and line are used. Something like you would use for trollilng for lake trout. The salmon I saw landed that day ranged
from about 15 to 23 lbs but larger ones are possible. Some fellows use a down rigger type of arrangement to fish in the strong current. There are a good
number of rod holders along the walk ways and fishing is definitely encouraged.

There is a small salmon fishing derby near the end of August as well.

SOO!!!-- Sault Ste. Marie that is!
Above left picture shows the bridge going from Sault Ste Marie Ontario to Sault Ste Marie Michigan.
Above right picture you can see a couple of smoke stacks from the steel plant on the Ontario side. NOTE: the "LOCKS" for the large boats is on the USA side of the
St. Marys River. The St. Marys River (at this particular location) joins Lake Huron to Lake Superior to the west. Fishing is pretty good in this area for Salmon.
The U.S. Coast Guard is present and as well I saw the Ontario Provincial Police
boat.
The bent rod is from a fellow who is using a 'down rigger' method.
Most people use the 2 oz. or perhaps a bit heavier sinker with about 10 ft or
so of line out from a 3 way swivel (heavy duty type) and they let line out
quite a ways in the current..maybe 100 ft or more.
