TESTIMONIALS (and correspondence) FROM SATISFIED CUSTOMERS and some details on my hard to find parts and my testing capabilities for these rare/difficult to find parts. (PRICED TO MAKE IT WORTHWHILE TO FIX THE OLD RIG or sentimental old piece of electronics). I do some older entertainment stereo amps and preamps and the odd cb as well.

link back to my home page of earl andrews.com ham radio parts,
projects, repairs, antenna pages, all sort of stuff and fishing too!
Hi Earl,
The crystals arrived A-OK here --- many thanks!
I've tried several out already, & so far, so good, with one exception --- and unfortunately, it's the one that I was especially hoping to listen to the 9.5-MHz SW BC band with...! Just my luck.
Oh well, more testing required still...
BTW, thanks for the extras you tossed-in, too --- much appreciated!
Have a great weekend, & my vy

Many thanks again Earl. You are far more helpful than the technical specialist at NTE! I will let you know how it turns out. It will take a while because I will get some help from a fellow amateur in Ottawa who is a retired electrical engineer. I am not skilled at desoldering on a crowded circuit board.
Al the best in 2010 Earl.

Earl, got the boards today, plugged them in and
everything works again. Thanks for the help, will
let you know if power supply works when I get
time to switch IC.--- GARY
Above: pictured FT301 plug in circuit board. Here I have replaced a multilead component. I have de soldering tools to do the job and spare parts for these radios. Other similar vintage radios as well.
Plug in circuit boards allow easy repairs and economical postage to send back and forth. I have done several of these repairs for other hams.

I'm looking to buy parts and junk radios to take parts off of or fix up and sell or fix up and use!! If you have any of these older solid state radios..Id be interested in buying them ie working or limping along or outright junkers.
I am getting several parts requests weekly now from hams all over the world.
I sell parts for these older rigs too. ..CALL ME AT 705-848-9486 OR EMAIL ME AT THIS LINK HERE...EMAIL LINK CLICK

Parts Radios (good for pulling parts from)
|
FT301 -- I NOW HAVE 2
JUNKER UNITS AND CAN
SUPPLY PARTS. I have one
good FT301D to test the parts
out with. (plug in circuit boards)
I have a shop manual (53 pages
) in pdf form.
I also have 2 functioning
FT301s. I have sent parts such
as slug tuned cores (they get
broken) crystal filters,
oscillator crystals and a couple
of circuit boards to places such
as Europe.
NOTE: the Yahoo Group FT301
has lots of these files and info
too.
hw 7 junker units (I
have 2)-- some
parts for HW8 AND
maybe HW9 as well
TEN TEC
ARGONAUT
509--505 515
>>> I have one I pull
parts (509) from and 2
good working units and
many of the transistors
and fets ect. ie 1496
mixer chips
I have a TS780
2 meter and 440 mhz
transceiver
(Kenwood) that has a
bad logic and display
board but the rest of the
radio is good for parts.
I might junk it and part it
out..or I might take
another whirl at
repairing it.
Realistic DX160 short
wave receiver.
I have a junker with
parts to draw from
ATLAS 210X -- I now have 2 of these old classics. ONE WORKS FINE
and one is a parts rig with blown finals.
I can do board level (board swapping) and component level repairs
quite easily on this rig. It is easy to work on and lends itself well to MAIL
ORDER REPAIRS.
Typical repair $30 for 3 or so hours of work plus the cost of components
(my component prices are very reasonable). Plus the cost of mailing me
the defective circuit board(s).
I can also do some coaching on repairs to hams and often I do this for free.
If you are a new ham or want to get more information on ham radio..feel
free to write me or call me on the phone.
HAM RADIO IS A VERY GOOD OUTLET FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO
TINKER..(LIKE ME) ...but.. for those who just like to talk and work other
stations on the radio and exhange qsl cards and go to meetings and
social events..HAM RADIO has lots of these kinds of activities as well.
When I first got into ham radio back in 1972...I did very little technical stuff.
I mostly operated the radio and attended meetings ect.
Icom IC720. I have
still have some parts
for this radio but I
have sold some off.
HARRIS RF 230s
SOLD I have recently
sold the Harris unit.
I have done some
troubleshooting on this
transceiver but I (may) part
it out if I get a good offer
on some of the circuit
boards or I may sell it and
the power supply outright.
A real nice BOATANCHOR.

2 m fm rigs such as IC22
(I have 3 junker units of
this old classic). I have
spare crystals I can test
in my good IC22 and
parts radios to supply
parts (IE final output
transistors ect)
Was real popular in the
early 70s.
CB radios. I buy them
at Yard Sales. Both SSB
and AM units. Good for
parts and sometimes I get
them going. Sometimes I
use them for parts
sources. I have done a few
repairs for guys who have
sentimental attachment to
some particular radio.
I tend to dabble at things
and I only charge 2 or 3
hours labour ($10 per hour
shop fees for work) on a
typical cb.
Switched the IC in power supply and it fired
right up and works perfectly. Do you know anywhere to
get a boom mic that will work with an FT-301??? I have an old pair
of Military headphones that work well but a boom mic would work
well in VOX.
Again, thanks for the help and let me know about mic.
73, Gary
I managed to supply GARY with an obsolete
Toshiba voltage regulator chip for his power
supply. He replaced it himself. I only charged $5 to
pull this rather rare TA7089M chip. and send it to
him. I am now trying to buy more of these old
specialized chips or find a drop in replacement!
MY PRICES ARE VERY VERY GOOD.
FREE QUOTES for repairs and lots of free
advice as well on your repair.

*** I can also give advice on older electronics
and radios and parts.
++++ some electronics parts are RARE as
hens teeth and so are some radios. They are
hotly sought after. I can let you know if what
you have is valuable.
FT101-- I have a good working 101 and would be
willing to tackle some board level repairs and swap
boards with my rig to get yours going. I have some spare
parts as well. MY FT101 works very well. It does not
appear to drift much at all even from cold start
..although..I am starting to notice some dead spots on
some of the pots. A cleaning may be in order.
I also have a HARD COPY
SERVICE MANUAL FOR
THIS RIG and can advise and
help with repairs and alignments
ect.
If it is only a few pages from the
manual you need..I could photo
copy them for you to help you
out.
This FT221 HAS PLUG in
circuit boards something like the
FT301.
I have just ordered a hard copy
SERVICE MANUAL FOR THE FT221
from ebay.
I can do board level repairs on this
radio much like I do with the
FT301s.
The six meter version of this radio
should be similar in circuitry and I
might be able to help with repairs
as well.
I use this FT221 as my primary 2
meter rig for repeaters and
ssb/cw. Its been a good old
workhorse for me for many years.
For 6 meters I use a Ten Tec
Transverter with this radio.
Dear earl1andrews,
hello, Eddystone bits received this morning all
safe and sound. very well packed thank you. Very
pleased. Shame it took so long to ship as it is too
late to leave you the deserved positive feedback.
many thanks
Alan
note: these eddystone parts were sent to England. I do
export. The stuff I have sent seems to get there OK
but to send larger items (economically) It has to go by
boat/ship and it takes about 8 or 9 weeks to arrive!!!!
Small parts in an envelope overseas by air mail takes
about 9 business days and is fairly economical to do.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME FOR FREE ESTIMATES.
I can do some fine soldering. I have some basic tools.
Here is an Analog Devices DDS generator chip that I
soldered down on circuit board. I had a couple of wee
solder bridges so I used some liquid solder flux and braid
and drew out the excess solder off the leads. .
I could build this DDS generator for a modest fee of $25 for
Canadian Hams in particular. If you dont want to pay cash just
trade me some parts in exchange for my work. Im always looking
for older ICs and transistors (communications ICs like RCA and
Motorola) ect. Earl 705-848-9486.
DDS vfos are real neat devices that can cure problems such as
frozen ptos and problem drifting vfos in older radios ect. This
DDS vfo I am building is going to be used with my Argonaut 509
but I can use it as a stable signal generator as well. (mulitiuse).
I have had good results on ebay.
I sold some Eddystone Radio parts
to a chap in England and he was
most pleased with my packing.
Glad to be of service.
Thanks to Earl Andrews my Ten Tec 515 is back in action. The 5 watt scale
is slammed to the right, exactly where it should be, with the 515 putting
out between 5-6 watts on 80-20, with 2.5 watts on 10 meters.
Now to fix the other issues but that should not be a major problem. It was
an interesting venture as the board had odd holes in it. Earl was able to
assist in the hard to find components and certainly the pictures on his
website were invaluable. Here is his site
http://earlandrews.com:80/argonaut6.html but many of you already know of
that.
Now on the air, 7.030.
Thanks Earl. Frank (callsign removed for privacy) Antioch, IL

I can work on Argonaut 505,509, 515, Ten Tec Scouts, Argosy, that kind of radio. Heathkits are usually pretty easy to work on as well.
I have the parts and I can troubleshoot and repair circuit cards. I don't do alignments (YET) or PTO rebuilding because I do not have enough experience under my belt doing these.
TROUBLESHOOTING..FINDING THE FAULT(S) and fixing the problem seems to be suited to what I do best. I used to troubleshoot computer reports and lists ect when I was at work.

CB repairs. I have done some repairs. Mostly defects such as circuit problems. I don't do alignments (unless I have the service manual and procedures to work from) or PLL work. Just trouble shoot and repair of a problem or two. I work for $10 bench rate.

MY ULTRA LOW $10 PER HOUR BENCH RATE MAKES IT PRACTICAL TO HAVE ME HELP FIX YOUR OLD RADIO or sentimental piece of electronic gear. email ve3ab@personainternet.com or 705-848-9486

RF transistors (finals and drivers) (5 watt to 10 watt) I have plenty of these parts and I can match them up with my testers for a matched pair. QRP transistors (I have lots of them as well).

Hello Earl,
I contacted an electronics place that actually has the The TIL 306 and TIL308's,
they called me this morning for the price quote :
" $300.00 & $500.00 USD Each ! " this is from 4-STAR electronics in California
I guess gold may be cheaper and easier to buy .
The sales rep said the US government is their main clientele go figure,
anyway just thought i would drop that little tidbit upon you.
Thanks again for all your help so far

Gary
OBSOLETE PARTS..BIG BUCKS..SEE BELOW
from email I received. TIL 306s and 308s are used on
the FT301 display. -- I sell good used pulls for about
$12 each. as compared to the ridiculous amounts
some are charging. The best "fix" is an AADE
display or similar. A more or less permanent solution.
The TIL 306s and 308s are visible in the picture to the right..the
red digital readouts. These were manufactured in the mid 70s.
They are integrated circuits that have the logic, driver and
numerical segments all in one. Quite rare. I have some other old
chips and readouts in my junkbox and people give me stuff
sometimes and I stash it away in storage.
I used to work in the obsolete components division (NATO
items) and I would be pleased to answer any questions
about old parts you have and I buy old parts and trade them
and sell them too. Earl 705-848-9486.
Earl, how is your summer so far? Quite hot and humid here! My FT301 is still going great guns, thanks to you. One thing I notice which I didn't notice the 1st. 10 years that I had it,is that the position of the tune dial is very critical down to 1/16th. inch or less movement. If it is off position at all the watts out decreases quite a lot . I wonder if you have that situation with any of your FT301 rigs. Thank you and hope you continue to have a great summer. Earl::
Using the ten tec supply with my 525d caused it (the rig) to go into
oscillation (hear on the radio) after it had been on CW for a few
minutes.
I am now/ was using a 10 amp analog supply and haven't had the same
problem. Anyway. do the best you can and if you find nothing wrong...
bill me all the same...
---->> I took this 9 amp supply of Bills and ran it with my FT301SD (at
reduced power).
It did trip out even with only 25 watts output. Checked the regulation
with my meter. Downloaded the manual from the Ten Tec site.
TOOK THE POWER SUPPLY CASE OFF AND ADJUSTED THE ONE POT
THAT CONTROLS THE TRIP POINT..ADVANCED THE POT so that I could
get about 55 watts or so out with good regulation and no problems.
I CHARGED BILL ONLY $10.00 to do this adjustment.
**************************************************************************
Thanks - and you work way to cheap..
Bill, (identity protected)
Kingston, ON
-------
-------->>> not really BILL.....these simple basic repairs are a TIP TOE
through the tulips for me. Compared to some of the work I have done
in my life..If everything was this straight forward and hassle free I
would be laughing full time. ---->>> by comparision..I did do a much
more complicated repair on an FT 757GX transceiver. The high
density and layered construction with all those wiring harnesses to
dress and re-dress when taking the rig apart and then putting it all
back together. -- > and all those small screws and the complexity of
the circuit. ---->>> I will stick to the MORE BASIC fundamental
troubleshooting of equipment with a simpler layout...ie power
supplies and qrp rigs and rigs with plug in circuit cards ect.
The SIMPLER EQUIPMENT repairs are my thing. $10 per hour bench
rate. Sentimental pieces are treated with great respect.
John had sent me circuit boards from his FT301. He could find the general fault ..but I went in and confirmed the problem and fixed it. BAD SOLDER JOINTS were the problem AND one blown RCVR front end dual gate mosfet were the problems we encountered.

am looking for a few electronic parts for a school project, and
wondering if you have them. I am actually coming to Toronto
today, so I could pick them up.
THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF THING I DO...however..I am in
Northern Ontario about a 6 hour drive north of Toronto. --->
I mostly do mail order of parts. For a few transistors, a hank
of solder, a few hanks of enamelled wire and stuff like
that..I can send in the post for only $1.38 or so --AND THERE
WILL BE NO SALES TAX! (new HST POLICY for small
suppliers under $30K sales).
If you could get back to me as soon as possible, thanks

Dear Sir,
I am a new commer to the collection of vintage radios and computers. I was just surfing the net
trying to find information on how to begin the restoration process. I have 2 Westinghouse H435T5 and
H436T5 that I want to restore. I believe these radios date back to the 50's. I found your web site and must
say this is the most interesting and detailed site on restoring radios that I have ever found. What
a great job you have done and are doing.
Thank you for all the hard work in sharing this information!!! Have a great day!!!
Dan from Ohio
Thank You for the nice compliments! ---- I have been working diligently to improve my web site
and my small wee repair and parts business. Takes time but it is interesting and absorbing thing
for me to do!
