I do repair work/bench work (not alignments) FOR $10 PER HOUR. I work on the stuff I am familiar with
and have parts for..older stuff from the 1970s and 1980s and I can work on QRP radios and
accessories and kits (they tend to be simpler layouts with easy to find parts). Circuit Board work I am
especially well set up for. I have de-soldering machines, fluxes, braids and I have a fair amount of actual
work experience on the job. +++ below is a list of things I have worked on and work on (MAIL ORDER).

+++ alignments on Transceivers..I (normally) don't do YET. I want to get at some of my own gear first
and align it and see how my test equipment fairs and DEVELOP A PROCEDURE for the radio..ie Ten
Tec Argonaut 505/509s and FT301s.
These are RIGS I can work on. (REPAIRS/FIXES/ taking out MODs)..
stuff LIKE THAT (circuit board repairs mainly)...

++ FT301..my specialty. (I have done quite a bit of work on these
rigs for myself and others) (plug in circuit board fixes)..the rig is
too heavy to ship

+++ Ten Tec ARGONAUT 505, 509, 515.
--- I have the parts and I know the circuitry real well. I can't do the
alignments just yet. My test equipment needs some
improvements..BUT I can do repairs.
(I have all three of these radios working and circuit board
swapping with tech repairs..a thing I do)

++ Atlas 210X..I have 3 of these..one is  a parts donor radio..with
most of the parts still there..I can do board swapping and repairs.
The radio itself is not too heavy and it could perhaps be mailed
back and forth for repair.

++ MFJ 6 meter transverter. I have one parts unit with all the spare
parts and two that I use..one has an IF of 14 mhz the other IF of 144
mhz and I can trouble shoot these units farily easily. ALIGNMENT
procedures are not all that difficult since it is a kit for kit builders
so I could do that as well.

++ FT221 boards..I have a good working rig.

++ other transverters possible to work on..I have low drive
tranceivers and 19 db pads and can build custom attenuators and
stuff like that with all the parts I have around.

++ heathkits..I have 4 HW7s..one junker..I have many of the
parts..they are fairly generic. HEATHKITS are fairly easy to work on
with good instructions and I feel pretty confident working on them
Some are too heavy to ship however.

+++ power supply work..mostly linear power supplies. I have quite
a bit of experience with linear power supplies and can do fixes on
them (as long as I have the parts). Often..they are a bit large and
heavy to ship. I attend flea markets Ottawa and travel from Elliot
Lake the transcanada hiway and can pick up and drop stuff off).

**** so that is basically the kinds of gear I work on.

IF IN DOUBT..JUST SHOOT ME AN EMAIL.

PLUG IN CIRCUIT BOARDS LIKE THIS ONE FROM THE FT301 CAN BE SENT
INTERNATIONALLY with no problems from CUSTOMS and are light weight enough for
MAIL ORDER REPAIRS.
I have a good stock of many of these small discrete components from the 1970s and
80s ((SOLID STATE RADIOS)..
I HAVE DONE SEVERAL OF THESE MAIL ORDER REPAIRS.
Earl, got the boards today, plugged them in and
everything works again. Thanks for the help, will
let you know if power supply works when I get
time to switch IC.--- GARY
FROM CALGARY 2000 miles west of me.
Gary sent me 3 boards from his FT301. (the ones he was sure were causing his
bad noise problem on receive)..turned out only 1 board had a fault..the RF board.
A zener diode was bad causing great rcv noise. I replaced the zener and charged
$30 LABOUR COST. MAILING cost was about $10 each way.
This is typical of my
LABOUR CHARGES..I CHARGE THE SAME WAY..I WOULD LIKE TO BE CHARGED FOR
BASIC TYPE REPAIRS
((older stuff that is not worth repairing at $50/hr bench rates
that larger places charge))

Above: pictured FT301 plug in circuit board. Here I have replaced a
multilead component. I have de soldering tools to do the job and
spare parts for these radios. Other similar vintage radios as well. SEE the list I have
provided. YOU CAN EMAIL ME FOR A FREE QUOTE and I CAN HELP YOU WITH
REPAIRS BY EMAIL OR PHONE..I DONT CHARGE FOR CONSULTATIONS that take less
than 1/2 hour or so..and for longer consultations..I CHARGE ONLY $10 per hour.

Plug in circuit boards allow easy repairs and economical postage to
send back and forth. I have done several of these repairs for other
hams.  SMALLER UNITS such as transverters..MFJ transverters..I have some parts
for those ones.

I also buy junker units..TRANSVERTERS, CONVERTERS, RADIO PARTS..to help me
(and other hams...SHORTWAVE LISTENERS...DO THEIR OWN WORK..
OR..I can do the
repairs BY MAIL ORDER. I am in Northern ONTARIO north of MICHIGAN STATE and
2 hours east of Sault Ste Marie MICHIGAN border crossing.
Many thanks again Earl. You are far more helpful than the
technical specialist at NTE! I will let you know how it turns
out. It will take a while because I will get some help from a
fellow amateur in Ottawa who is a retired electrical engineer.
I am not skilled at desoldering on a crowded circuit board.

Al the best in 2010 Earl.

(((
I GIVE OUT ALOT OF FREE ADVICE AND HELPS..KEEPS ME BUSY
AFTER TAKING EARLY RETIREMENT IN 2005.
)))

I am trying to get a small repair part time business with parts
supply part time..BUT IT TAKES TIME TO GET SOMETHING
ESTABLISHED.
The FT221 pictured here..is the kind of older solid state gear that
I work on.

PLUG IN BOARDS..I can take your suspect boards and plug them
into my rig and do the component replacement.

I have quite a few of the components. (not all of them however).
I might have to seek help in getting some components for a
radio such as this.

NOTE: my $10 per hour bench rate still applies
Custom work with COILS AND COIL SLUGS possible. I can fix them
and measure them up..perhaps broken slugs or broken wires
other problems..

I take these cases on a one by one basis. I have all kinds of slug
tuned coils and torroids and other parts.

This measuring device in the picture seems fairly accurate and
has been giving me good precise measurements.

I'd be glad to try and help you out with coil fixes and replacements
or custom winding. All at a very reasonable..
"retirement rate"...bargain basement rate.

Hello Earl,
I contacted an electronics place that actually has the  The TIL 306
and TIL308's,
they called me this morning for the price quote :
" $300.00 & $500.00 USD Each ! " this is from 4-STAR electronics in
California

I guess gold may be cheaper and easier to buy  .
The sales rep said the US government is their main clientele go
figure,
anyway just thought i would drop that little tidbit upon you.

Thanks again for all your help so far
CUL  73
Gary

ACTUALLY..I HAVE COLLECTED A NUMBER OF THESE RARER HARD
TO GET DIGITAL DISPLAY PARTS.

I have tested them in my ft301 as pictured below and can sell you a
good used readout for $10..!!!much cheaper than getting scalped
on ebay!
MY VARICAP DIODE TEST JIG ABOVE. I HAVE A BUNCH OF VARICAPS THAT WERE
GIVEN TO ME AND IM going to be testing them up.

I buy and test and sell components as a sideline as well. This jig was from the AADE
web site. That is an excellent web site with good links as well.
NICE FLOWERS..nice to know I'm not doing this in VAIN!!!

Hello Earl,  well I have a problem with my 301D that has been in
storage for many years now.
It worked when I put in away but it will not key and I would like to
attempt this repair myself
except I'm at a loss as to where I should start looking for the
problem.

Any help and/or guidance you can shed on the problem would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Paul

do my bench work (electronics) and ham radio and web work.
Hi Earl,

I've just been reading your webpage on repairing the
Yaesu FT301. I also have a FT301 that I have had since
new. I note that your web page indicates a QC magazine
article for adding 30 meters using the Aux switch
position.

Would there be any chance of getting a copy of this
article?
(
I have the article PDF file. I also sell the 24.5 mhz
crystals for the MOD at only $6 each
). --> Bry Brian
Carling also sells crystals but his prices are about $12
each. I have bought some crystals from him in the past
and they were good.

Thanks for a great website,

Roderick from VK3land

(
I get requests the odd time for articles like this that I
write about in my ham radio pages
)..I'm glad to help.

I can help out with the odd part or two as well if you try
out some of the circuitry featured in my web pages.
I sell the parts I have stockpiled..(I have a good bunch
now!!!) and I only MARK THE PRICE UP ABOUT 20 PCT
OVER WHAT I PAID. Very slim margin of profit. (HELPS me
buy a few more parts)!!!
FREE HELP and Information to hams and would be ham radio operators. I
sometimes get asked for articles (pdf) or copies of manual pages and stuff like that.
I gladly send them out or post on a web page for you to copy.
This is free
networking for me..and I certainly don't ask for payment.
MY WIFE (Annetta) and I travel down
hiway 17 from Elliot Lake to Ottawa..and
travel through such places as Sudbury,
North Bay, Pembrooke, Eganville, Smiths
Falls and Ottawa.

We visit our families back home during
these times and we attend HAM RADIO
FLEA MARKETS with a TABLE at Smiths
Falls..each MAY,
Carp (near Ottawa- early Sept); Sudbury
Ham flea market (fall) and we can make
stops along the way at Timmys to pick up
or drop off electronics. Email me at this
link
ve3ab@personainternet.com and we
can make a deal perhaps.
MAIL ORDER
REPAIRS..TO
smaller size
electronics items
such as this
converter & trans-
verter pictured. I
replaced a couple
of dg mosfets in
this case and got
it working again.
My $10 per hour
bench rate makes
it worthwhile to
repair vs  throw it
out. I do small
consumer grade
items other than
ham radio that fall
into this general
category. Mostly I
work on older
solid state stuff
from 70s and 80s.

I offer FREE
REPAIR
CONSULTATIONS
and estimates no
setup charges ect.
EMAIL IS BEST..I ALWAYS ANSWER MY
EMAILS right away..unless Im out fishing or
something!!!! ....if you want to speak to me on
the phone..send an email and I will give you
the phone nr.
SOMETIMES people have
donated parts to me. To them I
say a great big THANKS!!!

I sort, test, catalogue and store
them. I use them too in some
homebrew projects or repairs.
I do fixes/repairs..and stuff like that. I don't do
complex alignments on radios them selves as my
test equipment is a bit too old and the radios are
generally too heavy to ship.
Small items my specialty.

Mostly I only charge about $20 or $30 labour charge
to fix a converter or transverter like this one. If it
takes me longer to do..I dont charge for that! FREE
NO PRESSURE ESTIMATES and CONSULTATIONS.
Hi Earl -

Congratulations on your great hammagazine site! I just stumbled across it  and am
still digesting it all.

Hi, do you have any 712-12 Teledyne relays available please? if so do you
mail them to the UK??
Tks
Geoff

I sent him 8 of these relays and postage to UK was $5.40 light packet AIR.

Hi Earl, all arrived safe/sound, tks

Earl < if you want to sell the other ones please let me know as I installed
them on the job today and A1!!!!
Geoff

I hung onto some for myself and others. Often I limit quantities so I do not
sell out and I maintain a good inventory so I can fill the needs of other
hams and tinkerers.

SMALL ORDERS ARE THE GENERAL RULE FOR MY LITTLE ENTERPRISE.
I sold these nice little Teledyne relays at a real
bargain price! Customer wanted more !!!!
I buy old solid state parts, new old stock or even assemblies with good used
parts I can pull. MOTOROLA, RCA, Harris, Heath, T.I. of particular interest. I buy,
catalogue and sell at good prices in small quantities to hams/experimenters and
potential hams. STUDENTS building projects also welcome.
